BSc (1st class) in Industrial Metallurgy, University of Birmingham, 1956 PhD in Metal Physics, Cavendish Laboratory, University of Cambridge, 1962 DSc in Materials, University of Birmingham, 1975 I worked in metallurgical research at ICI (Metals Division), Birmingham, and at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, Connecticut, USA, before becoming an academic, first at Sussex University and subsequently at the University of Bath where I was Professor of Materials Science from 1976 until retirement in 2000. My main areas of academic research have been in the fracture and fatigue behaviour of fibre-composite materials, manufacturing of composites, non-destructive evaluation of composites and composite structures, the mechanical behaviour of biological materials (including wood), and the environmental deterioration of building materials. Since retiring, I have been working as Materials Consultant to Buro Happold Civil Engineers Ltd. and have carried out extensive work on urban air-quality modelling on behalf of the Bradford on Avon Preservation Trust.
