Energy and Sustainable Development

Energy poses a dilemma in efforts aimed at achieving sustainable development in that it is necessary for economic and social development, yet it is a major cause of environmental degradation especially with regard to the atmosphere. Despite the growth in commercial energy use, two billion people remain without access to modern energy and this represents a major challenge for those committed to achieving sustainable development. The case studies presented in this publication provide a wide range of experiences related to conventional energy, energy market reform, energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.
