Melita's life at Martinique had seemed blessed with beauty. But when she heard the drums pounding softly in the night, she remembered what she had heard about Voodoo. Following the sound she pushed her way through the branches and saw a group of slaves swaying around candles in the clearing. In their midst an old woman called out in a language Melita did not understand. Suddenly, the old woman cried clearly with the voice of a young girl: "Save Comte Ettienne! Save him!" Horrified, Melita realized with uncanny certainty that the man she loved was in terrible danger. But why? And what dreadful power spoke through the possessed woman?
