<p>In this, <a href="https://standardebooks.org/ebooks/emile-gaboriau">Gaboriau’s</a> penultimate <a href="https://standardebooks.org/collections/monsieur-lecoq">Lecoq</a> novel, Lecoq doesn’t make an appearance until the last few chapters of the book. In fact, the protagonists’ identity remains unclear until almost halfway through.
