The illustration for each letter is taken from a book by one of twenty-eight different artists who flourished between 1874 and 1926. Brief biographies of each illustrator (Boutet de Monvel, Crane, Willebeek Le Mair, Dulac, Parrish, Brooke, Rackham, etc.) are included.
