Sara's life had been a precarious one, touring the world with her grandfather, who lived on his wits to support them both. It was a way of life which was to have far-reaching consequences for Sara. Once it would have seemed preposterous that she would become a "Bride of the Rif" with such wedding ceremonies as the "cleaning of the wheat" and being painted with henna.
