Beyond high iron gates fastened with a length of chain, lies stark, beautiful Trawbawn. Here, hainted by a dark and mysterious past, and largely ignored by the people of nearby Skibbereen, lives the fragile Lydia Beauchamp. One day a starnger arrives - a young man named Adam - who becomes Lydia's first contact with the outside world. She sends him on a quest - to track down her estranged daughter in Dublin.
