The Lord's prayer in its Biblical setting

The approach in this book seeks to take into consideration the total biblical background of the Lord's Prayer, including the setting of both the Old and New Testaments. It also takes account of the prayer life at the synagogue as far as this can be ascertained, recognizing that this institution was a school more than a center for worship. Most of the books written on the Lord's Prayer are devotional in character. This is understandable in view of our customary use of this prayer. The present volume takes its stance from the conviction that the life of the spirit can rise no higher than the roots of understanding will allow; at least this is the place to begin. The studied explanation of the meaning of a word or phrase in the light of its historical background is no less a spiritual concern than instruction in prayer procedures or devotional exhortations. -- Prologue.
