A series of ʿĀmirid dictators were the powers behind the caliphal throne during the long reign of Hishām II. Four ʿĀmirid dynasties were established during the period of taifas (petty kingdoms) that followed the collapse of the caliphate: Valencia, Dénia, Almería and Tortosa.
