Chaetophorales is an order of green algae in the class Chlorophyceae. Algae in the order Chaetophorales consist of filamentous, branched algae. The thalli have two parts, a prostrate and upright section and the filaments are variously branched. The algae are found in freshwater habitats or terrestrial habitats.

Aphanochaetaceae is a family of green algae in the order Chaetophorales. It occurs mainly in freshwater habitats; it may inhabit running or stagnant water, sometimes within the mucilage of red algae or other green algae.
Aphanochaete
Aphanochaete is a genus of green algae in the family Aphanochaetaceae. The name Aphanochaete was given by Alexander Braun in 1850. The genus was actually described one year earlier by Carl Nägeli as Herposteiron, but the name Aphanochaete has been conserved against Herposteiron.
