pneumothorax
A pneumothorax is collection of air in the pleural space between the lung and the chest wall. Symptoms typically include sudden onset of sharp, one-sided chest pain and shortness of breath. In a minority of cases, a one-way valve is formed by an area of damaged tissue, in which case the air pressure in the space between chest wall and lungs can be higher; this has been historically referred to as a tension pneumothorax, although its existence among spontaneous episodes is a matter of debate. This can cause a steadily worsening oxygen shortage and low blood pressure, leading to a potentially-fa
hemothorax
A hemothorax (derived from hemo- [blood] + thorax [chest], plural hemothoraces) is an accumulation of blood within the pleural cavity. The symptoms of a hemothorax may include chest pain and difficulty breathing, while the clinical signs may include reduced breath sounds on the affected side and a rapid heart rate. Hemothoraces are usually caused by an injury, but they may occur spontaneously due to cancer invading the pleural cavity, as a result of a blood clotting disorder, as an unusual manifestation of endometriosis, in response to pneumothorax, or rarely in association with other conditio
cardiac tamponade
Compression of the heart due to excessive accumulation of fluid in the pericardium (sac in which the heart is enclosed)
rib fracture
break in a rib bone
Pulmonary contusion
internal bruise of the lungs
flail chest
life-threatening medical condition that occurs when a segment of the rib cage breaks due to trauma and becomes detached from the rest of the chest wall
subcutaneous emphysema
condition occuring when gas or air travels under the skin
Commotio cordis
heart injury
diaphragmatic rupture
tear in the thoracic diaphragm, usually caused by physical trauma
slipping rib syndrome
medical condition
chest trauma
any form of physical injury to the chest
hemopericardium
Hemopericardium refers to blood in the pericardial sac of the heart. It is clinically similar to a pericardial effusion, and, depending on the volume and rapidity with which it develops, may cause cardiac tamponade.
hemopneumothorax
Hemopneumothorax, or haemopneumothorax, is the condition of having both air (pneumothorax) and blood (hemothorax) in the chest cavity. A hemothorax, pneumothorax, or the combination of both can occur due to an injury to the lung or chest.

tracheobronchial injury
damage to the tracheobronchial tree
pneumatocele
thumb|Large, right lower lobe pneumatocele is shown, compromising ventilation in a premature infant with Infant respiratory distress syndrome|RDS and superimposed RSV pneumonitis. A pneumatocele is a cavity in the lung parenchyma filled with air that may result from pulmonary trauma during mechanical ventilation.
