Dolichopus
Dolichopus is a large cosmopolitan genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. Adults are small flies, typically less than 8 mm in length. Nearly all species are metallic greenish-blue to greenish-bronze. It is the largest genus of Dolichopodidae with more than 600 species worldwide.

Medetera
Medetera is a large genus of flies in the family Dolichopodidae. It includes about 350 species worldwide. The adults are commonly found resting on vertical surfaces such as tree trunks, on which they have a characteristic vertical upright stance. Because of this stance, they are sometimes known as "woodpecker flies". Medetera adults are predators of soft-bodied arthropods, while the larvae are predators of bark beetle larvae.

Campsicnemus
Campsicnemus is a genus of flies in family Dolichopodidae. There are more than 290 described species, made up of 34 Palearctic, 22 Nearctic, seven Afrotropic, 170 Australasian and Oceanian, and seven Indomalayan species. Some species endemic to the Hawaiian islands are characterized by their lack of wings. After the introduction of invasive ants and other alien species such as wild boar (Sus scrofa) to the islands, some of these flightless species are believed extinct.

All known larvae of the genus are phytophagous stem-miners of plants in the families Cyperaceae, Poaceae, Juncaceae, and Pontederiaceae. Female adults have a strong, pointed ovipositor used to pierce and insert eggs in the stems of the plants.

In Brooks (2005)'s phylogenetic analysis of the subfamily Dolichopodinae, Allohercostomus was hypothesized to be the most basal member of the subfamily based on a triangular depression present on the scut
