Fictional ball games

Quidditch () is a fictional sport invented by author J. K. Rowling for her fantasy book series Harry Potter. It first appeared in the novel ''Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'' (1997). In the series, Quidditch is portrayed as a dangerous but popular sport played by witches and wizards riding flying broomsticks.

BASEketball is a 1998 American sports comedy film co-written and directed by David Zucker, starring South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and costarring Yasmine Bleeth, Jenny McCarthy, Robert Vaughn, Ernest Borgnine and Dian Bachar. The film is about BASEketball, a hybrid sport combining baseball and basketball, invented by Zucker in the 1980s. Parker and Stone play childhood friends who envision it as something they could win against athletes. It becomes an overnight sensation and a target of corporate sponsorship.

Jugger is a sport inspired by the 1989 film The Salute of the Jugger (released as The Blood of Heroes in the United States), in which a game of the same name is played. The film version was invented by the film's stunt coordinator, Guy Norris, and its writer-director, David Webb Peoples, for the movie. The transformation into a real sport happened independently in Germany, the United States, and Australia in the late '80s and early '90s.

Apopudobalia (; ἀπο- + ποδός + ball + -ία) is a fictional sport that was the subject of a famous fictitious entry by the German ancient historian Mischa Meier in Der neue Pauly Enzyklopaedie der Antike, edited by H. Cancik and H. Schneider, vol. 1 (Stuttgart, 1996, ), which gives a description of an ancient Greco-Roman sport that anticipates modern soccer.
