Blacksad is a noir comic series created by Spanish authors Juan Díaz Canales (writer) and Juanjo Guarnido (artist), and published by publisher Dargaud in album format. Though both authors are Spanish, their main target audience for Blacksad was the French market, publishing all Blacksad volumes in French first; the Spanish edition followed about one month later. The first volume, Quelque part entre les ombres (literally Somewhere between the Shadows, but simply called Blacksad in the US), was published in November 2000. Oumpah-pah le Peau-Rouge (Ompa-pa the Redskin) is a comics series created by comics artist Albert Uderzo and comics author René Goscinny, best known as the creators of Asterix. The series first appeared in the weekly Tintin magazine in 1958 though it remained serialised for a relatively short time, ending in 1962. The stories were published in book form by Lombard and Dargaud starting in 1961. In 1995, the series was reissued by Albert Uderzo's own publishing house, Éditions Albert René.

The film was a co-production between French studio Ankama Animations and the Japanese Studio 4°C, directed by Shōjirō Nishimi and Guillaume "Run" Renard. The comic would be published in English as MFKZ by Sumerian Comics' beginning in June 2021. Mutafukaz was released in France on May 23, 2018, and in Japan on October 12, 2018. At the end of December 2022, it was added to Hulu's streaming platform.
