One sense of the name refers to frames with teeth (also called shanks) that pierce the soil as they are dragged through it linearly. Another sense of the name also refers to machines that use the rotary motion of disks or teeth to accomplish a similar result, such as a rotary tiller.

mattock
A mattock () is a hand tool used for digging, prying, and chopping. Similar to the pickaxe, it has a long handle and a stout head which combines either a vertical axe blade with a horizontal adze (cutter mattock), or a pick and an adze (pick mattock). A cutter mattock is similar to a Pulaski used in fighting fires. It is also commonly known in North America as a "grub axe".

Khurpa
A khurpa (alternatively called a khurpi) is a short-handled cutting tool similar to a Trowel with a flat blade used for digging soil and weeding in small gardens or vegetable farms. It is commonly used in small farms, ridges, or rows of vegetables to hoewing or earth up the weeds. It is traditionally used while in a squatting posture. The work khurpa is a word in the Punjabi language.

The grafter is usually in the form of a small knife made of thin metal. The blade of a grafting knife is beveled, or curved, on one side and flat on the other so that the knife can cut easily through wood with a flat cut that provides the most contact possible in the finished graft. Grafting knives should be sharpened after every use.
