The film was launched in 1977, but faced delays due to various issues between the cast and the crew, finally released on 20 February 1981.

The film began principal photography in the mid-1980s and was delayed for several years before being released in 1996. A sub-plot with a killer shark may have been inspired by the 1975 American film Jaws.

It is the second installment in the Sujeeth Cinematic Universe, following Saaho (2019), starring Pawan Kalyan in the titular role, alongside Emraan Hashmi, Prakash Raj, Priyanka Mohan, Arjun Das, Sudev Nair and Sriya Reddy. The film follows Ojas Gambheera, a retired gangster who returns to Bombay in 1993 after a decade to face a powerful crime-lord Omi Bhau.
