Katwijk is located on the North Sea, northwest of Leiden and 16 km north of The Hague. The Oude Rijn ("Old Rhine") river flows through the town and into the North Sea.

The site is first mentioned in 1401, was uncovered more completely by storm erosion in 1520, 1552 and 1562, and has subsequently been entirely eroded away.
