The village lies on the southeast side of the island of Frei, along the Freifjorden, about southeast of the town of Kristiansund. The villages of Nedre Frei and Storbakken lie about to the southwest and the village of Rensvik lies about to the northwest.

Nordlandet
Nordlandet is an island in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island is located just east of the city center of Kristiansund, and is one of the boroughs of the city. The island is home to Kristiansund Airport, Kvernberget, which is named after the nearby tall mountain Kvernberget. This is the largest of the islands that make up the city of Kristiansund (the others being Kirkelandet, Innlandet, and Skorpa).
Kirkelandet
Kirklandet or Gomalandet is an island in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The island is split in two by the Vågen inlet, with the western half called Kirklandet and the eastern half called Gomalandet. The name of the island means "church land", since it has been the historic site of a church. Today, Kirkelandet Church is located on the western part of the island.
Talgsjøen
Talgsjøen is a strait or fjord in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The strait is located between the island of Tustna in Aure Municipality in the northeast, several islands in Kristiansund Municipality to the southwest, and the mainland of Tingvoll Municipality in the southeast. The strait connects the Norwegian Sea with the Korsnesfjorden, Halsafjorden, and Freifjorden.
Vinjefjorden
Vinjefjorden () is a fjord in Møre og Romsdal and Trøndelag counties in Norway. It begins at the village of Vinjeøra in Heim Municipality (in Trøndelag county) and flows west through the municipalities of Aure, Tingvoll, and Kristiansund (in Møre og Romsdal county). At its western end, it flows into the Talsjøen and Freifjorden. The Halsafjorden, Skålvik Fjord, and Valsøyfjorden all branch off of the long Vinjefjorden. The central part of the Vinjefjorden is called the Arasvikfjorden. European route E39 runs along the southern shore of the fjord for most of its length.

Kvernberget () is a barren mountain formation with a maximum elevation of . The mountain is located on the island of Nordlandet on the western edge of the town of Kristiansund in Kristiansund Municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. Kristiansund Airport, Kvernberget, which sits nearby, takes its name from the mountain.

Freifjorden
thumb | right Freifjorden is a fjord in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway. The long fjord flows through Kristiansund Municipality, Tingvoll Municipality, and Gjemnes Municipality. The fjord begins near the island of Tustna and flows southwest between the islands of Nordlandet and Frei on the west side and the mainland peninsula of Straumsnes and the islands of Aspøya and Bergsøya on the east side. The Kvernesfjorden lies at the west end of the Freifjorden, near the Freifjord Tunnel. The villages of Nedre Frei and Kvalvåg are located on the western shore of the fjord.
