Al-ʿAwāṣim (, "the defences, fortifications"; sing. al-ʿāṣimah, , "protectress") was the Arabic term used to refer to the Muslim side of the frontier zone between the Byzantine Empire and the Umayyad and Abbasid Caliphates in Cilicia, northern Syria and Upper Mesopotamia.
