It is made up of three separate companies: the Strasbourg-based European Economic Interest Grouping (EEIG) ARTE, plus two member companies acting as editorial and programme production centres, Arte France in Paris (formerly known as La Sept) and Arte Deutschland in Baden-Baden (a subsidiary of the two main public German TV networks ARD and ZDF).

It is a generalist channel with a cultural focus and is jointly operated by public broadcasters from Germany (ZDF, ARD), Austria (ORF) and Switzerland (SRG SSR). The coordinating broadcaster is ZDF, at whose Mainz facility the broadcasting centre with studios for in-house productions is located.

ColorsxStudios GmbH (formerly Colors Media UG), commonly known as Colors (stylized in all caps), is a German music performance platform that aims at introducing and showcasing emerging artist talent in the form of videos with minimalist aesthetics. Since its inception in February 2016, their eponymous YouTube channel has amassed over eight million subscribers and over three billion cumulative views. The recognizable peculiarity of their videos is that each band or artist is filmed alone on stage with a neutral background of a particular color.
