Particulates

page 1
particulates
microscopic solid or liquid matter suspended in the Earth's atmosphere
cloud condensation nucleus
small particle (typically 0.2 µm) on which water vapor condenses
angle of repose
(of a granular material) steepest angle of descent or dip relative to the horizontal plane to which a material can be piled without slumping. At this angle, the material on the slope face is on the verge of sliding
sulfate
The sulfate or sulphate ion is a polyatomic anion with the empirical formula . Salts, acid derivatives, and peroxides of sulfate are widely used in industry. Sulfates occur widely in everyday life. Sulfates are salts of sulfuric acid and many are prepared from that acid.
dust explosion
rapid combustion of fine particles suspended in the air
respiratory droplet
particle formed in the respiratory system too large to become airborne
black carbon
atmospheric soot; component of fine particulate matter
bulk density
overall density of a granular material, with void space included in the denominator
ice nucleus
Particle helping to form an ice crystal
cryoconite
thumb|right|200px|A layer of cryoconite on the surface of a glacier. Cryoconite is powdery windblown dust made of a combination of small rock particles, soot and microbes which is deposited and builds up on snow, glaciers, or ice caps. The darkening, especially from small amounts of soot, absorbs solar radiation melting the snow or ice beneath the deposit, and sometimes creating a cryoconite hole. Cryoconite may contain dust from far away continental deserts or farmland, particles from volcanic eruptions or power plant emissions, and soot. It was first described and named by Nils A. E. Nordens
Rain dust
form of precipitation containing visible dust
particle-size analysis
classification of particle sizes
ultrafine particle
particulate matter of nanoscale size
Ship tracks
Clouds that form around the exhaust released by ships
Twomey effect
the effect of solar radiation being deflected by clouds
deposition
process by which aerosol particles collect or deposit themselves on solid surfaces

particle density
density of individual particles contained in a granular material or other heterogeneous mixture
