Cited as the "first female superstar" of Indian cinema, she was the recipient of various accolades, including a National Film Award, Seven Filmfare Awards (a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award, Three Filmfare Awards, Three Filmfare Awards South), Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, a Kerala State Film Award, and a Nandi Award. Vaiko, birth name Vaiyapuri Gopalsamy (born 22 May 1944), is an Indian politician. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Parliament of India from Tamil Nadu. He is the founder and General Secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), a political party active mainly in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He was earlier elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India from Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu. He is father of Trichy MP Durai Vaiyapuri.
