The long river runs past the village of Lakselv. The European route E06 highway runs along the river for much of its course. The river is famous for its Atlantic salmon fishing.

The long river runs through the Stabbursdalen valley which is in the Stabbursdalen National Park which contains the world's most northerly pine forest. The river empties into the Porsangerfjorden about north of Lakselv, along the European route E06 highway.
