Situated on the coast of the Baltic Sea, approximately 30 km north-west of Kiel, it has a population of about 23,000. Eckernförde is a popular tourist destination.

Its name derived from a regional geographical designation, and it is officially recognized as a state-approved resort (staatlich anerkannter Erholungsort).
