Rethymno (municipality)

Rethymno ( , Italian: Retimo, formerly also Rettimo or Retimno, Latin: Civitas Rethymnæ, Turkish: Resmo) is a city in Greece on the island of Crete. It is the capital of Rethymno regional unit, and has a population of more than 35,000 inhabitants (nearly 40,000 for the municipal unit). It is believed to have been built on the site of the earlier city of Rhithymna.

Archaeologists excavated the site, located on a narrow northern spur of Mount Ida, the highest mountain in Crete. The site is about 1 km south of modern town of Eleftherna, about 8 km north east of Moni Arkadiou, in the current municipality of Rethymno. It flourished from the Dark Ages of Greece's early history until Byzantine times.

Gonia was the seat of the former municipality Nikiforos Fokas. There is a saying in Turkish “gördün mü Hanya’yı, Konya’yı / Did You see Chania and Gonia”.
