Tetraodontidae is a family of marine and freshwater fish in the order Tetraodontiformes. The family includes many familiar species variously called pufferfishes, puffers, balloonfishes, blowfishes, blowers, blowies, bubblefishes, globefishes, swellfishes, toadfishes, toadies, botetes, toadle, honey toads, sugar toads, and sea squabs. They are morphologically similar to the closely related porcupinefish, which have large external spines (unlike the thinner, hidden spines of the Tetraodontidae, which are only visible

Fugu (; ; ) in Japanese, bogeo (; 鰒魚) or bok () in Korean, and hétún () in Standard Modern Chinese refers to pufferfish, normally of the genus Takifugu, Lagocephalus, or Sphoeroides, or a porcupinefish of the genus Diodon, or a dish prepared from these fish.

Takifugu
Takifugu, also known by the Japanese name , is a genus of pufferfish with 25 species, most of which are native to salt and brackish waters of the northwest Pacific, but a few species are found in freshwater in Asia or more widely in the Indo-Pacific region. Their diet consists mostly of algae, molluscs, invertebrates and sometimes crustaceans.

Lagocephalus
Lagocephalus (from Ancient Greek λαγώς (lagṓs), meaning "hare", and κεφαλή (kephalḗ), meaning "head", in reference to its rabbit-like face) is a genus of pufferfishes in the family Tetraodontidae with a circumglobal distribution.
Carinotetraodon
Carinotetraodon is a polyphyletic genus of small freshwater pufferfish found in South and Southeast Asia. Several species have commercial importance as aquarium fish.

Canthigaster
Canthigaster (from Ancient Greek κανθός (canthós), meaning "corner of the eye", and γαστήρ (gastḗr), meaning "belly") is a genus in the pufferfish family (Tetraodontidae). A fish from this genus is sometimes referred to as a "toby" (a generally accepted name that originated in Australia) or a "sharpnose puffer".

Sphoeroides
Sphoeroides is a genus of pufferfishes.
Torquigener
Torquigener is a genus of pufferfishes native to the Indian and Pacific oceans. Males of at least two Torquigener species are known to make elaborate circular nests on the seafloor.
Colomesus
Colomesus is a genus of pufferfishes confined to tropical South America. Apart from differences in size, the three species are superficially similar, being green above, white below, and patterned with black transverse bands across the dorsal surface. C. asellus is commonly found in the aquarium trade, while C. psittacus, due to its size and more specialized requirements, is not found as often.

Chonerhinos naritus
Chonerhinos is a monotypic genus of pufferfish, family Tetraodontidae. The only species is Chonerhinos naritus, the bronze pufferfish or yellow pufferfish. It is native to Southeast Asia, where it is mainly found in estuarine and coastal habitats. This species grows to a length of TL, but otherwise it generally resembles the smaller and more strictly freshwater Auriglobus pufferfish. This predatory species feeds on other fish, crustaceans (both crabs and shrimp) and snails.

Auriglobus
Auriglobus is a genus of freshwater pufferfishes native to Southeast Asia. They generally resemble Chonerhinos, but are considerably smaller, only reaching up to in length, and are more strongly associated with freshwater. The different Auriglobus species are very similar in appearance — greenish-golden or yellowish-golden above and pale below — but can be separated by morphometrics and meristics. Until 1999, the Auriglobus species were included in Chonerhinos.
