Mordvins (also Mordvinians, Mordovians; ; no equivalents in Moksha and Erzya) is an official term used in Russia and the Soviet Union to refer both to Erzyas and Mokshas since 1928.

Erzya people
The Erzyas (also Erzyans, Erzya people'''''; ; ) are a Finno-Ugric ethnic group. Their native language is Erzya. They are closely related to but distinct from Mokshas, and together they are often called Mordvin peoples, especially by outsiders.

The Mokshas (also Mokshans, Moksha people; ) comprise a Mordvinian ethnic group belonging to the Volgaic branch of the Finno-Ugric peoples. They live in Russia, mostly near the Volga and Moksha rivers, a tributary of the Oka River.

Purgaz
Purgaz or Inäzor Purgaz (; ) was an Erzyan (Mordvin) leader in the first half of the 13th century. He was the ruler (inäzor) of the Principality of Purgaz. Being an ally of Volga Bulgaria, he resisted the Suzdal Russians' expansion into the region. In later times, he became a symbol of Erzyan independence and a figure of legend.
