7-Zip is a free and open-source file archiver, a utility used to place groups of files within compressed containers known as "archives". It is developed by Igor Pavlov and was first released in 1999. 7-Zip has its own archive format called 7z introduced in 2001, but can read and write several others.

WinRAR is a trialware file archiver and compression utility for Microsoft Windows, developed by Eugene Roshal of win.rar GmbH (RARLAB) since 1995. It can create and view archives in RAR (a format created by Roshal) or ZIP file formats, and unpack numerous archive file formats. To enable the user to test the integrity of archives, WinRAR embeds CRC-32 or BLAKE2 checksums for each file in each archive. WinRAR supports creating encrypted, multi-part and self-extracting archives.

WinZip is a trialware file archiver and compressor for Microsoft Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. It is developed by WinZip Computing (formerly Nico Mak Computing), which is owned by Alludo. The program can create archives in Zip file format, unpack some other archive file formats and it also has various tools for system integration.

ARJ (Archived by Robert Jung) is a software tool designed in 1991 by Robert K. Jung for creating high-efficiency compressed file archives. ARJ is currently on version 2.86 for MS-DOS and 3.31 for Microsoft Windows and supports 16-bit, 32-bit and 64-bit Intel architectures.

PeaZip is a free and open-source file manager and file archiver for Microsoft Windows, ReactOS, Linux, MacOS and BSD by Giorgio Tani. It supports its native PEA archive format (supporting compression, multi-volume split, and flexible authenticated encryption and integrity check schemes) and other mainstream formats, with special focus on handling open formats. It can also view disk image files like BIN, C2D, IMG, ISO and NRG. TugZip repairs corrupted ZIP archives and can encrypt files with 6 different algorithms.

PKZIP is a file archiving computer program, notable for introducing the popular ZIP file format. PKZIP was first introduced for MS-DOS on the IBM-PC compatible platform in 1989. Since then versions have been released for a number of other architectures and operating systems. PKZIP was originally written by Phil Katz and marketed by his company PKWARE, Inc starting in 1986. The company bears his initials: "PK".

WinAce is a legacy archiving app for Windows. It works primarily with the eponymous ACE archive format but supports ZIP, RAR and CAB. The app is not free, but its developer also developed a freeware, CLI app called Unace for macOS and Linux that extracts archive files.

StuffIt is a discontinued family of computer software utilities for archiving and compressing files. Originally produced for Macintosh, versions for Microsoft Windows, Linux (x86), and Sun Solaris were later created. The proprietary compression format used by the StuffIt utilities is also termed StuffIt.

Zipeg is an open source free software that extracts files from a wide range of compressed archive formats. Zipeg works under Mac OS X and Windows. It is best known for its file preview ability. It is incapable of compressing files, although it is able to extract compressed ones. Zipeg is built on top of the 7-Zip backend. Its UI is implemented in Java and is open source.

ALZip is an archive and compression utility software application developed by ESTsoft for Microsoft Windows that can unzip forty different archive file formats. ALZip can also archive files into eight different archive formats. Introduced in ALZip version 8, their own proprietary ALZ and EGG archive formats can be used, which supports Unicode, compression and other features.

ZipGenius is a freeware file archiver developed by The ZipGenius Team for Microsoft Windows. It is capable of handling nearly two dozen file formats, including all the most common formats, as well as password-protect archives and work directly with CD-R/RW drives. It is presented in two editions: standard and suite. While the suite edition includes optional modules of the ZipGenius project (oriented to experts and power-users), the standard setup package simply includes the main ZipGenius application.
