Antonín Zápotocký was the son of Ladislav Zápotocký, a pioneer in the Czech workers' movement. In December 1920 he ranked among the chief organizers of a general strike in the Kladno region and participated in an attempt at a left-wing coup. In the course of the twenties he belonged to Smeral's group in the leadership of the Czechoslovak Communist Party (CCP). Antonín Zápotocký ( Czech pronunciation: [ˈantoɲiːn ˈzaːpototskiː]; 19 December 1884 – 13 November 1957) was a Czech communist politician and statesman in Czechoslovakia. He served as the Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia from 1948 to 1953, and then as President of Czechoslovakia from 1953 to 1957.
