Social democracy is a political ideology emerging in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In contrast to communists, social democrats believed that a transition to a democratic socialist society could be achieved through evolutionary democratic means rather than through exclusively revolutionary means. They also rejected authoritarianism and totalitarianism in all its forms.
