Mawalan Marika (1908-1967) was a leader of the Rirratjingu clan, in north-western Arnhem Land. The Yirrkala Methodist Mission was set up in this territory. Marika became a spokesman and a negotiator with non-indigenous peoples. For him, art was a way of advocating understanding and an appreciation of the Yolngu (Arnhem Land Indigenous Australians).
