Etymology: Borrowed from Ancient Greek ἄγαμος (ágamos, “unmarried, single (of men)”). From a- (“not”) + -gamy (“marriage”).

1. Absence or nonrecognition of marriage, or absence of a pair bond.

   “Cichlids exhibit monogamy, polygyny, polyandry, and agamy. […] In agamous relationships, there is no bond formed at all. They separate from each other immediately after spawning.”
