Etymology: Uncertain. The first part, cess-, is undoubtedly the same as for cesspool, whose origin is likewise uncertain. The second part is pit, a hole in the ground.

1. A cesspool; a pit or covered cistern used to collect sewage and waste water.
2. A place or situation characterised by corruption, filth or immoral activities.
