Pronunciation: /ˌsaɪ.toʊˈmɛ.ɡə.loʊˌvaɪ.rəs/

noun

Etymology: Internationalism. Borrowed from taxonomic name Cytomegalovirus, equivalent to cyto- + megalo- + virus.

  1. Any of several herpes viruses, of the genus Cytomegalovirus, that infect the salivary glands of certain primates, including humans.

The peak period for the development of acute graft-versus-host disease overlaps with the time during which cytomegalovirus infection occurs.

Prophylactic virostatic treatment with aciclovir did not prevent cytomegalovirus infection in an immune suppressed patient.
