Etymology: First attested in 1731. Borrowed from Latin ēlūtus, from the verb ēluō (“to wash away”).

  1. To separate one substance from another by means of a solvent; to wash; to cleanse.

    A mixture of isooctane and ethyl acetate can be used to elute triglycerides from a complex lipid solution.
