Pronunciation: /ˈɛnəd͡ʒaɪz/ / /ˈɛnɚd͡ʒaɪz/ / /ˈenəd͡ʒɑɪz/

verb

Etymology: From energy + -ize.

  1. To invigorate; to make energetic.

Magazines of the day celebrated the new gay health consciousness in articles which linked the proliferation of gay bodybuilding with the health craze sweeping the country, though this was often complete nonsense. For did we not, all of us, know scores of friends who used drugs to energize their workouts, who smoked dope, took speed, and shot up anabolic steroids to facilitate that mad, muscular frenzy?

  2. To supply with energy, especially electricity; to turn on power to (something).

Whenever we energize that circuit we blow a fuse.

  3. To use strength in action; to act or operate with force or vigor; to act in producing an effect.

Of all men it is true that they feel and energize first, they reflect and judge afterwards.
