Etymology: Borrowed from Hindustani ہِنْدُوسْتان (hindūstān) / हिंदुस्तान (hindustān), itself from Classical Persian هِنْدُوسْتَان (hindūstān, “Indian subcontinent”). By surface analysis, Hindu + -stan.

1. India (Republic of India).
2. The entire region of the Indian subcontinent.
