Etymology: From Middle English oonnesse, onnesse, from Old English ānnes (“oneness, unity, agreement, covenant, solitude”), from Proto-West Germanic *ainnassī (“oneness”), equivalent to one + -ness. Cognate with Old High German einnissī, einnissa (“unity, oneness”).
