noun

Etymology: Compound of sales + person.

  1. A person whose job is to sell things, often in a shop or store.

When I was a child, salespeople were usually stationed behind a counter in any given department. […] Having searched in vain for an item and finding a salesperson to ask if the store has it, more often than not you are greeted with, "Do you see it? Then we don't have it."

Thus despite sex-typing at Macy's and Target—the placing of salespersons in like-gendered departments and women more often in interactive roles that paid less—women were not much more class-conscious than men.
