Etymology: An Indian English word of Indo-Portuguese origin, from Portuguese varanda (“balustrade; balcony”). Further etymology is unclear and disputed.

1. A gallery, platform, or balcony, usually roofed and often partly enclosed, extending along the outside of a building.

   “Boulte ate his breakfast, advised her to see her Arab pony fed in the veranda, and went out.”

   “No matter how early I came down, I would find him on the veranda, smoking cigarettes, or otherwise his man would be there with a message to say that his master would shortly join me if I would kindly wait.”
