Burkinabe drama films

Yeelen (Bambara for "brightness"/"light") is a 1987 Malian film written, directed and produced by Souleymane Cissé. It is filmed in the Bambara and Fula languages, and is based on a legend told by the Bambara people. Though the era is undefined, it is presumably set in the 13th century in the Mali Empire and is a heroic quest narrative featuring magic and precognition.

Yaaba is a 1989 Burkinabé drama film written, produced, and directed by Idrissa Ouedraogo, "one of the best known films from francophone sub-Saharan Africa". It won the Sakura Gold prize at the 1989 Tokyo Film Festival. The film was selected as the Burkinabé entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 62nd Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee.

Tilaï ("The Law") is a 1990 award-winning Burkinabé drama film co-written, co-produced, and directed by Idrissa Ouédraogo. It premiered at the 1990 Toronto Festival of Festivals.

Adanggaman is a 2000 historical drama film directed by Roger Gnoan M'Bala. It was an international co-production between the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Switzerland, Italy and France. The film premiered at the 57th Venice International Film Festival on 31 August 2000.

Desrances is a 2019 Burkinabé drama thriller film directed by Apolline Traoré and produced by Denis Cougnaud. It stars Jimmy Jean-Louis and Jemima Naomi Nemlin with Evelyne Ily and Mike Danon in supporting roles. The film was shot at Haiti.

Ashakara is a French-Swiss produced Burkinabé-Togolese dark comedy film directed by Gérard Louvin, starring James Campbell, Jean-Marc Pasquet, Willy Monshengwo and Bamela Nyanta. It was released in 1991 and entered into the 1992 Cognac International Film Festival, Solothurn Film Festival, Pan African Film Festival and Vevey International Funny Film Festival.

Tasuma is a 2004 comedy-drama directed, written and produced by Kollo Daniel Sanou which tells the story of a Burkinabé war veteran who had fought for France abroad returning to his home village.
