Charophyta
Charophyta () is a paraphyletic group of freshwater green algae, called charophytes (), sometimes treated as a division, yet also as a superdivision. The terrestrial plants, the Embryophyta emerged deep within Charophyta, possibly from terrestrial unicellular charophytes, with the class Zygnematophyceae as a sister group.
Charophyceae
Charophyceae is a class of charophyte green algae. AlgaeBase places it in division Charophyta. Extant (living) species are placed in a single order Charales, commonly known as "stoneworts" and "brittleworts". Fossil members of the class may be placed in separate orders, e.g. Sycidiales.

Charales
Charales is an order of freshwater green algae in the division Charophyta, class Charophyceae, commonly known as stoneworts. Depending on the treatment of the genus Nitellopsis, living (extant) species are placed into either one family (Characeae) or two (Characeae and Feistiellaceae). Further families are used for fossil members of the order. Linnaeus established the genus Chara in 1753. thumb|Submerged meadow of Chara vulgaris thumb|Lime crust on Chara sp. in a spring pond in Germany
Mesostigmatophyceae
The Mesostigmatophyceae are a class of basal green algae found in freshwater. In a narrow circumscription, the class contains a single genus, Mesostigma. AlgaeBase then places the class within its circumscription of Charophyta. A clade containing Chlorokybus and Spirotaenia may either be added, or treated as a sister, with Chlorokybus placed in a separate class, Chlorokybophyceae. When broadly circumscribed, Mesostigmatophyceae may be placed as sister to all other green algae, or as sister to all Streptophyta.
Spirotaenia
Spirotaenia is a genus of basal unicellular green algae that may be sister to the Chlorokybophyceae. It was previously considered to be part of the Zygnemataceae. It is sexually conjugating, a mode of reproduction that was previously only known in the Zygnemataceae/Mesotaeniaceae, the sister groups to the land plants. This is surprising, as Spirotaenia is much more basal. The conjugating process is substantially aberrant. Spirotaenia may actually be more than one distinct lineage which may not be closely related.
Coleochaetophyceae
Coleochaetophyceae is a class of charophyte algae related to land plants (only Zygnematophyceae is closer). There are about 35 known species, and are predominantly found in freshwater where they live periphytic on the surface of aquatic plants, plastic bags and pebbles in the shallow littoral zone of freshwater lakes. These are small (<200 μm) disc-shaped or filamentous species, and have true multicellular organisation with sexual and asexual reproduction. The discs never develop beyond a two-dimensional organization. Their mitogenome is the most intron rich organelle among the streptophyte al
Characeae
Characeae is a family of freshwater green algae in the order Charales, commonly known as stoneworts. They are also known as brittleworts or skunkweed, from the fragility of their lime-encrusted stems, and from the foul odor these produce when stepped on.
Nitella
Nitella is a genus of charophyte green algae in the family Characeae.
Klebsormidiaceae
The Klebsormidiaceae are a family containing five genera of charophyte green alga forming multicellular, non-branching filaments. The genus Chlorokybus was previously included as well, but this problematic and poorly known genus is now placed in a separate class Chlorokybophyceae.
Klebsormidiales
Klebsormidiales is an order of charophyte algae. Until Bierenbroodspot et al.'s phylogeny, it was the only order in the class Klebsormidiophyceae, sister of the Phragmoplastophyta. , AlgaeBase accepted two families in the order: Elakatotrichaceae Hindák Klebsormidiaceae K.D.Stewart & K.R.Mattox In 2024, Bierenbroodspot et al. emended Klebsormidiophyceae and Klebsormidiales, and described 2 new orders, namely Entransiales and Hormidiellales.

Chlorokybus
Chlorokybus is a multicellular (sarcinoid) genus of basal green algae or charophyte. It has been classified as the sole member of the family Chlorokybaceae, which is the sole member of the order Chlorokybales, in turn the sole member of the class Chlorokybophyceae. It grows on soil and rock surfaces, and is rare.

Coleochaete
Coleochaete is a genus of parenchymatous charophyte green algae in the order Coleochaetales. They are haploid, reproduce both sexually and asexually, and have true multicellular organisation, with plasmodesmata communicating between adjacent cells. The plants form flat, sprawling discs on solid surfaces in freshwater streams worldwide, usually as epiphytes on aquatic plants or growing on the surface of stones. They are seen as one of two most probable sister groups to land plant species, the second candidate group being the Characeae. The issue is still not resolved. As they show some of the e

Chaetosphaeridium is a genus of green algae. Several classifications have been proposed. Its traditional classification is in the order Coleochaetales, related to the genus Coleochaete. AlgaeBase places it in the order Chaetosphaeridiales.

Coleochaetaceae
Coleochaetaceae is a family of algae. It is the only family in the Coleochaetales, an order of parenchymous charophyte algae, within the class Coleochaetophyceae. It includes some of the closest multicellular relatives of land plants. It contains the genus Coleochaete and questionably includes the fossil genus Parka.
