Abéché é a capital da prefeitura de Uadai, no sudeste do Chade, cerca de 650 km a leste e ligeiramente para norte da capital do país, Ndjamena. É a quarta maior cidade do Chade. Situada numa região semi-desértica, é um centro mercantil de caravanas dos nómodas, possuindo mercados e mesquitas. A goma-arábica é produzida localmente, mas um projecto agrícola para a produção de amendoim, financiado pelos chineses, não foi bem sucedido. Localiza-se não longe do antigo caminho de caravana que ia de Cartum a pelo Kordofan e Darfur. Fundada em 1850, essa cidade foi o centro militar do país, assim como um foco de propaganda religiosa tão importante como a antiga capital, , hoje arruinada. A sua população em 1993 era de 187 936 habitantes.
