The genus is sometomes classified in the tribe Hypoptopomatini. This subfamily is classified within the subfamily Hypoptopomatinae, sometimes called cascudinhos, of the suckermouth armoured catfish family Loricariidae, in the suborder Loricarioidei of the catfish order Siluriformes.
