An acre is a unit of land area used in the British and American measurement systems, traditionally defined as a rectangular plot measuring one chain by one furlong (66 by 660 feet), which equals 43,560 square feet or roughly 4,047 square meters. It matters because it's the standard way people in the United States and British Commonwealth countries measure and describe land area for property, farming, and real estate purposes.
