Charakteristisch für den Adeliepinguin ist der schwarze Kopf, der weiße Ring rund um das Auge und der verhältnismäßig klein wirkende Schnabel. Neben dem Kaiserpinguin ist er die einzige Pinguinart, die auf dem Hauptteil des antarktischen Kontinents vorkommt. Eine im Rossmeer befindliche Brutkolonie dieser Art gilt sogar als die südlichste Pinguinkolonie weltweit. Benannt ist die Art nach der Frau des französischen Polarforschers Jules Dumont d’Urville. Es werden keine Unterarten für diese Art unterschieden. Die IUCN stuft den Adeliepinguin derzeit als ungefährdet (least concern) ein.

It is the most widespread penguin species in the Antarctic, and, along with the emperor penguin, is the most southerly distributed of all penguins. It is named after Adélie Land, in turn, named for Adèle Dumont d'Urville, who was married to French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville, who first discovered this penguin in 1840.
