Alex Roshuk

Alex Roshuk is a Canadian and American (dual national) video artist, writer, television/film producer, craftsperson and lawyer. He has received grants from the NEA (Washington D.C.), the Canada Council and the Québec Ministry of Cultural Affairs and has had several artist residencies at the Experimental Television Center(Owego, NY). His work has been shown in North America, Japan and Europe in galleries, festivals and broadcast. His video art is in the collections of the NYC Anthology Film Archives, Institute for Contemporary Art (London, U.K.), the NYC Public Library and Le Vidéographe (Montréal), among others. He has taught film and video workshops at Young Filmmakers Foundation (NYC), S.U.N.Y. Purchase, the Philadelphia College of Art and Design and Main Film (Montreal). He began making 16mm films in his teens at the Henry Street Settlement on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He studied film criticism with Gilberto Perez at Princeton University in the mid-70s and worked as a producer for Italian Television in the late 1970s, directing and editing several documentaries. He has worked as an editor, cameraman and sound man on many independent artist film and video productions. In 1983, with Richard Feist, they founded “Standby” ( for video artists giving them access to state-of-the-art video editing and digital effects. He worked as an arts administrator/director for artist-run organizations in the U.S. and Canada such as the the Harmonic Arts Society, the International Network for the Arts (NY), the Media Alliance (NY), The Canadian Independent Film Caucus, the Alliance of Independent Film and Video, Main Film (Montréal), Playwrights’ Workshop Montréal, CKUT-FM (Montréal) where he hosted a legal information talk show, and Le Vidéographe. He was legal counsel to the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. (Wikipedia) from 2003-05. He lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn where he practices law focusing on entertainment, immigration and family law. He has two law degrees from McGill University (BCL/LL.B, 1997) with honors and was awarded the Osgoode Society of Canadian Legal History Prize. He completed graduate work in the History Department at McGill University and is a Canadian armiger. Alex serves on the board of advisors for the Filmmakers Cooperative in New York and on the board of directors for The Standby Program, Inc. Alex Roshuk (July 14, 1956[1] – November 9, 2014 2) was an American attorney who was the first legal advisor to the Wikimedia Foundation.
