Alexander H. Stephens

Alexander H. Stephens was an American politician and writer born in Taliaferro County in 1812 and died in Atlanta in 1883. He served as the Governor of Georgia, a member of the United States House of Representatives, and Vice President of the Confederate States of America. His political career included membership in the Whig Party and the Democratic Party. He was educated at the University of Georgia, where he was also employed.

Stephens was a Presbyterian who spoke English. He was a candidate in the Confederate States presidential election and was associated with the American Civil War. His literary output includes works such as *Georgia and Ohio again*, *A compendium of the history of the United States from the earliest settlements to 1872*, and *Speech of Mr. Stephens, of Georgia, on the subject of the Mexican War*. His papers are archived at Duke University and the National Archives and Records Administration.
