The AN/ALE-47 airborne countermeasures dispenser is used to protect military aircraft from incoming radar and infrared homing missiles. It works by dispensing flares or chaff from a large variety of military aircraft.
In accordance with the Joint Electronics Type Designation System (JETDS), the "AN/ALE-47" designation represents the 47th design of an ArmyNavy airborne electronic device for countermeasures ejection equipment. The JETDS system is now also used to name all Department of Defense and some NATO electronic systems.
