Andrew Dickson White

Andrew Dickson White was an American diplomat, historian, politician, and university teacher. Born in Homer in 1832, he was educated at Yale College and held positions as an ambassador and rector. He was employed by the University of Michigan and Cornell University, working in Berlin and Ithaca. White was a member of the Republican Party and contributed to the creative work *Popular Science*.

He authored numerous works, including *Outlines of a course of lectures on history*, *University hall. Dedication of the new university building at Ann Arbor*, *The address of President White of Cornell*, *The most bitter foe of nations*, *New chapters in the warfare of science*, and *The relation of national and state governments to advanced education*. White was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences, the Phi Beta Kappa Society, and the American Antiquarian Society. He was described by sources such as the *Nordisk familjebok*, *Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary*, *Granat Encyclopedic Dictionary*, and the *Encyclopædia Britannica* 11th edition. He died in 1918 and is buried in Tompkins County.
